Oncology Nursing Scholarships

Advanced Practice Nurse Conference Scholarship

  • Recipients of this scholarship will receive an educational grant for a maximum of $1,200 to apply toward the ONS Oncology Advanced Practice Nurse Conference registration, travel to and from the conference and per diem conference expenses.*  The conference registration fee will be automatically deducted from grant prior to payment.
  • Individual livings or working within a 50 mile radius of the conference location are eligible to receive the conference registration fee only which will be paid directly to ONS.
  • Applicants may apply on their own or be nominated for this scholarship by an ONS Chapter or Special Interest Group (SIG).  Each chapter and SIG may nominate one nurse for this award.

Bachelor’s in Nursing Degree Scholarship

  • This scholarship’s purpose is to provide scholarships to individuals who are interested in and committed to oncology nursing and pursuing a baccalaureate degree in nursing. Bachelor’s scholarships awarded annually at $2,000 each.  Scholarships are available to individuals who are pursuing a bachelor’s degree in nursing, do not currently hold an RN license and do not have a college degree.  This scholarship is supported by Roberta Pierce Scofield scholarship supported by the ONS Foundation, Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation, Oncology Practice Alliance, Inc.

Congress Scholarships

  • Recipients will receive an educational grant for up to $1,200 to apply toward ONS Congress registration, travel to and from Congress and per diem Congress expenses.  The Congress registration fee will be automatically  deducted from the grant prior to payment.
  • Individuals living or working within a 50 mile radius of the conference location are eligible to receive the conference registration fee only. The Congress registration fee will be paid directly to ONS.
  • One scholarship is available from the Oncology Hematology Care, Inc. to support a Cincinnati Tri-State Chapter member attending Congress.
  • One scholarship is available to nurses residing and/or employed in Alabama. This scholarship is in memory of Issie Rembert “Chappi” Chapman.

Mary Scherbring ONS Institutes of Learning Conference Scholarships

  • The Mary Scherbring Conference Scholarship was established in 2007 by the Southeast Minnesota Chapter of ONS in memory of their colleague Mary Scherbring.  Recipients of this award will receive a educational grant for up to $1,200 to apply toward ONS Institutes of Learning Conference registration, travel to and from the conference and per diem conference expenses. The conference registration fee will be automatically deducted from grant prior to payment.

Multidisciplinary Cancer Education Grant

  • This scholarship’s purpose is to provide seed money to support an oncology RN in developing and/or implementing a cancer related multidisciplinary education or practice project for healthcare professionals. Priority will be given to those projects that focus on survivorship.  To be eligible for this scholarship, candidate must be: employed as an oncology nurse for a minimum of 1 year; multidisciplinary program or project may be new or one in progress for future implementation (preference given towards those programs that affect cancer survivorship); and demonstrate that the impact of the program is on more than one discipline within the multidisciplinary health care team.

Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) Scholarships

  • The Oncology Nursing Society (ONS), the ONS Foundation, and the Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation (ONCC) are dedicated to the professional development of oncology nurses around the world. Through the awards, scholarships, and research grants described in this section of www.ons.org, these organizations seek to recognize those nurses devoted to the care of individuals with cancer and to the specialty of oncology nursing.
  • ONS, the ONS Foundation, and ONCC gratefully acknowledge the corporate supporters that have helped to foster an environment that encourages and supports the pursuit of excellence in oncology nursing.

Pearl Moore Career Development Awards

  • The scholarship provides three $3,000 awards and plaques.
  • Its purpose is to support three professional staff nurses for meritorious practice by providing financial assistance to attend a continuing-education program(s) that will further the nurse’s professional goal(s). This award is not intended to supplement tuition in a bachelor’s or master’s program.
  • The candidate currently must be employed as a staff nurse in oncology nursing with a minimum of 75% of his or her time devoted to direct patient care, have two or more years in oncology nursing practice, and possess or be pursuing a bachelor of science in nursing. An individual cannot receive this award more than one time.

Research Fellowship Award

  • Funded by the ONS Foundation through an unrestricted grant from Genentech BioOncology.
  • The one-year award is for $20,000. The fellow receives up to $18,000 to cover research-related expenses. The mentor or the mentor’s institution will receive a $2,000 award in the form of an unrestricted honorarium to cover the mentor’s consultative or research-related expenses and/or other institutional costs.
  • Registered nurses with a doctoral degree and an interest in oncology are eligible to be funded to work with a senior investigator who has an existing research program relevant to oncology nursing.

Roberta Pierce Scofield and Ann Olson Doctoral Scholarships

  • Doctoral scholarships are supported by the ONS Foundation Roberta Scofield Doctoral Scholarship and the Ann Olsen Doctoral Scholarship supported by Pfizer.  Doctoral scholarships awarded at $3,000 and $5,000 annually.  The candidate must be currently enrolled in (or applying to) a PhD, DNSc or DNP nursing degree program for the 2012-2013 academic year and must have a current license to practice as a registered nurse and must have an interest in and commitment to oncology nursing.

Sandy Purl Mentorship Scholarships

  • The scholarship was named after Sandy Purl who was a role model to many oncology nurses in Chicago and across the nation.  Her joy was her career as an oncology nurse.  Her passion was mentoring other nurses and improving the care of patients with cancer through her work and volunteer activities in the Chicago Chapter of the Oncology Nursing Society.
  • The scholarship is up to $1,000 support for an additional ONS Chapter member to attend the ONS Mentorship Weekend.
  • An applicant must be a current ONS Chapter Board or committee member supported by a Chapter Leader Sponsor. Applicant must share their goal for attending Mentorship Weekend and how they plan to use the information they use.

Small Research Grant

  • Small grant awards are available at $10,000 each. Funding period is for 2 years.  These grant awards are designed to support oncology nursing research conducted by beginning and experienced researchers. The majority of the small grants are for general investigator-initiated oncology topics. Funding preference is given to research that addresses the ONS Research Priorities and Research Agenda. The principal investigator must be actively involved in some aspect of cancer patient care, education, or research. Funding preference is given to projects that involve nurses in the design and conduct of the research activity. Membership in ONS is not required.
