African Palliative Care Nurses Scholarship Fund

Introduction
The African Palliative Care Association (APCA) in partnership with FHSSA (previously the Foundation for Hospices in Sub Saharan Africa) provides a limited number of scholarships each year for Palliative Care Training opportunities for nurses. The Scholarship fund was established by a generous anonymous donation in honor of Kath Defilippi, the founding Board Chair of the African Palliative Care Association to recognize her many career achievements as a nurse in hospice and palliative care in Africa.

Scholarships are awarded up to a maximum of US$ 4,000 through a competitive application process once a year. APCA and FHSSA give priority to requests of Registered and Enrolled nurses to pursue formal palliative care training in Africa. They are also willing to potentially consider one scholarship for a distance Learning Masters programme, when necessary for the career objective of the student (i.e. Registered or Enrolled Nurse) and in line with palliative care development in Africa. Application requests will also be considered for travel for palliative care conferences judged to be of interest to the development of palliative care in Africa.

Rationale of the Scholarships
Palliative care education should target a diverse audience (e.g. policy makers, health care workers and the general public) to increase their awareness, skills and knowledge of, and to change their attitudes, towards palliative care. One critically important group is nurses who are at the forefront of care, and are present at all levels of the health care system from the community to the facilities. Indeed, for the vast majority of patients across Africa, and especially in rural areas, nurses are the only health care professionals available to tend to a myriad of care needs.

The role of the nurse in palliative care is not limited to the provision of care only. Nurses also play a vital role in education and mentorship for students, patients, families and community health workers. However, despite this, the inadequate incorporation of palliative care into the pre-service (undergraduate) training of nurses, the lack of clear career pathways for nurses interested in specialising in palliative care and lack of recognition of palliative care qualifications by local ministries of health and education continues to be a challenge. As palliative care gets integrated into the Nurse’s curricula across Africa, an effort being supported through APCA, the need for qualified lecturers and tutors in this discipline has become obvious in countries like Kenya, Malawi and Botswana among others.

What the Scholarship fund will Support in 2012
The Scholarship fund will support:
A contribution of up to US$4,000 per person for palliative care education and training at recognised institutions in Africa for Enrolled and Registered Nurses. Training programmes which the Scholarship supports include:

Bachelor of Science in Palliative Care (Degree)

Distance Learning Diploma in Palliative Care

Palliative care initiators course

Nurse prescribers’ training

Additionally, the fund will make available sponsorship of a maximum of US$500 per person for approximately 5 nurses to attend and make a presentation to targeted national and international conferences on palliative care with an objective of improving their presentation skills and giving them an opportunity to interact with other Palliative Care providers.

A contribution of up to USD $4,000 to one distance learning Masters training in palliative care may be considered in the year.

Note: this list is not exhaustive and is presented as an indication of what the fund will cover. Other appropriate training opportunities within Africa for nurses related to palliative care may also be considered for funding.

A Comparison Between North American Requirements Vs. African Curriculum

A surgeon is a physician that specializes in surgery, a medical specialty that uses operative manual and instrumental techniques on a patient to investigate and/or treat a pathological condition in the purpose of trying to cure a disease, healing an injury or improving bodily function or appearance. The surgeon performs the surgical procedure, operation, or simply surgery. A surgeon can perform general surgery that includes cardiothoracic surgery, vascular surgery, plastic surgery, pediatric surgery, colorectal surgery, transplant surgery, surgical oncology, trauma surgery, endocrine surgery, breast surgery, and skin surgery. Meanwhile, Specialist surgeons perform surgery for otolaryngology, gynecological, oral and maxillofacial, orthopedic, neurosurgery, ophthalmology, podiatric surgery and urology.

Trail of to a Surgeon’s Career in Africa

Becoming a surgeon by profession requires passion and vocation. Embarking a career as a surgeon will require formal studies of 10 years or longer. Thus, perseverance is key to attaining the specialization. The educational requirements of becoming a surgeon starts from being a general practitioner. Thus, in Africa, one has to enroll a six-year medicine course, graduate and get a MB BCh, Medicinae Baccalaureus, Baccalaureus Chirurgiae degree, and fulfill a mandatory full-time internship that varies in terms from 1 year to 2 year to 3 year housemanships. The internship is required to be taken in University or Government Teaching hospitals accredited by the medical school. After which medical licensure as a General Practitioner is obtained. Then, more often than not, the doctor has to register with the regulating council or any regulating agency in whichever region he is desiring to practice his profession. Then, one has to gain practical experience for at least a number of years as a general practitioner before considering specializing in surgery. This is the first step to conquering the strict and competitive admission criteria for a trainee as a general surgeon. One will have to get an admission as a candidate to the training program of the surgical department of a medical school before becoming acknowledged in a fellowship of surgeons.

Becoming a Surgeon in North America

In North America, the post-secondary education and training path to be a surgeon will start from an undergraduate education earning a Bachelor’s degree for 4 years. Then, the students takes a Graduate or Professional education to either become a Doctor of Medicine (MD) or a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) for another 4 years. Then, the student takes medical residency training for surgical specialization which would take another 5 to 6 years depending on the surgical specialty. Then, the student takes a sub-specialty fellowship training which is optional as an advanced sub-specialty which would take another 1 to 4 years depending on the fellowship program.

A Comparison Between MLA Programs in Africa and in North America

Medical Laboratory Assistants mainly function in assisting other lab workers, usually medical lab technologists. Most of the time, Medical Laboratory Assistants prepare, and in some cases process samples within a pathology laboratory. In high-end laboratories, Medical Laboratory Assistants may deal with pre-analytical systems in order for biomedical scientists or Medical Laboratory Scientific Officers to process the biochemical tests requested on the sample. In the more common setting, Medical Laboratory Assistants spend majority of their time in processing specimens.

How to Become a Medical Laboratory Assistant in Africa

The job of becoming a medical laboratory assistants require proper training and education on laboratory specimen handling from receiving process, to handling specimens, down to releasing results. In Africa, to obtain a certification on becoming a Medical Laboratory Assistant, the applicant must meet certain qualifications, successfully pass an examination and complete several admission procedures. It is usually a 2-3 year program requiring completed secondary education, that is, Senior Secondary Certificate Examination and/or General Certificate of Education. For holders of a minimum of two years post qualification experience a 3-year term may be completed in just 2 years. After completing the program, students are required to pass concluding examinations administered by regulating councils depending on the region.

How to Become a Medical Laboratory Assistant in North America

It might seem like this is not a very physical job but it has to be considered that a medical laboratory assistant may spend a lot of time on his feet, depending on the hospital or clinic. While they depend on the people that they are assisting, they have a lot of independent functions like running laboratory machinery, sterilizing equipment and preparing specimen samples. In North American countries, courses for medical laboratory assistants can range from a 20-week course to a 2-year term depending on the school, the region, and the specialties that you want to consider. Courses can be offered in colleges or even in vocational schools. The first term would get you an associates degree in laboratory science while the second half may be applications that will grant the proper certification required. Courses typically include Medical Terminology, Phlebotomy Workshop, Professional Practices and Safety in Health Care, Phlebotomy Procedures and Specimen Preparation, Microbiology Specimen Preparation, prior to the Laboratory Practicums to Evaluate Student Competencies. In most cases, the first 20 weeks are dedicated to lecture while the remaining weeks are dedicated for practice and evaluation.

Pharmacist education in Africa is more or less the same in terms of curriculum planning and admission requirements. It generally requires a high school diploma or its equivalent. It is a six-year course. The first four years focus on didactic education and simulation training, while the last two years are considered clinical residency in which students practice clinical pharmacy at various hospital and community pharmacies before they graduate. Most regions in Africa have a national board that regulates the influx and quality of graduates. It does not vary significantly in process and requirements with the North American countries but it according to research competencies are limited due to the curriculum selected which mainly focus on the following competencies:

compounding and packaging of pharmaceutical products

organize the procurement, storage and distribution of pharmaceutical materials and products

interpret the medicines laws and the professional and pharmacy regulations in order to dispense correctly

provide information and education on health and medicines-related issues

promote community health and provide related information and advice

participate in research and evaluate critically new therapies and current advances in formulation and modes of drug action to ensure the optimal selection and use of medicines.

In the North American countries, pharmacy requires 2 to 4 years undergraduate course in Associate or Bachelor degree in Pharmacy. Then, students proceed to a Doctor of Pharmacy degree that takes generally 4 years. All graduating pharmacists must now obtain the Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree before they are eligible to sit for the North American Pharmacist Licensure Examination to enter into pharmacy practice. The difference lie in the richness of competencies that the North American curriculum is training for. North American curriculum for pharmacy promotes the following competencies:

compounding medicines

education and counseling for patients and other health care providers on optimal use of medicines (e.g. proper use, avoidance of over medication)

clinical medication management, including reviewing and monitoring of medication regimens

assessment of patients with undiagnosed or diagnosed conditions, and ascertaining clinical medication management needs

specialized monitoring of disease states, such as dosing drugs in renal and hepatic failure

providing pharmaceutical information

providing patients with health monitoring and advice, including advice and treatment of common ailments and disease states

supervising pharmacy technicians and other staff

oversight of dispensing medicines on prescription

provision of non-prescription or over-the-counter drugs

referrals to other health professionals if necessary

Comparing the African Curriculum, to the North American Programs, to the Asian Trails of Becoming a Nurse

Nursing is a profession in the field of medical care and/or healthcare. It focuses on the care of individuals, families, and communities to maintain optimal health, recover from any sickness or injury, and retain quality health from birth to death. There is a large variety of specialties in the field of nursing which range from:

individual practice

to local and rural teams,

to being part of a hospital.

There are several types of nurses which could include:

Public Health Nursing,

Midwifery, and

Assistant Nursing.

Educational and licensure requirements vary depending on region and specialty.

How to Become a Nurse in Africa

In Africa, there are several types of nurses that includes, auxiliary nurses, midwives and psychiatric nurses. Each of these nurses, regardless of which type, will have to be required to have completed nursing course with required nursing degrees. Then, they are required to train at a hospital or a university with hospital training facilities. After completion of their proper schooling, they are required to complete a year of community service before entering into any nursing profession.

A general nursing first year curriculum in Africa would include courses in nursing history and ethics, basic nursing care, elementary nutrition, first aid, elementary anatomy and physiology, and introduction to comprehensive health care.

Meanwhile, the second year includes study of sciences fundamental to basic nursing including general nursing care, nursing care of the aged, nursing care of mentally retarded persons, community nursing care and psychiatric nursing care.

In Africa, nursing degrees are easily completed through the normal and regular flow of taking up a nursing course, getting the proper nursing training and completing the required community service before entering into any nursing profession. However, the is one more important step that has to be accomplished and that is to be registered under regulating councils at whichever region it is applicable to. This is equivalent to taking up licensure examinations at certain countries.

How to Become a Nurse in North America

In the North America, more particularly in the US and Canada, a bachelor’s degree in nursing strictly requires a high school diploma or equivalent is required and admittance can be competitive. A bachelor’s degree in nursing is very demanding of a good foundation in chemistry and mathematics in the secondary education. Depending on the region, there are require grades for secondary chemistry and math before one is admitted in a nursing program. Otherwise, prerequisite coursework can be required.

Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing is a 4-year programs providing a complete undergraduate education along with the training to become a licensed registered nurse.

After completing the program, the students are required to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses. After passing the licensure exam, its only then, that they become nursing practitioners.

How to Become a Nurse in North America

In Asia, nursing curriculum is taken up in four or five years. The first two years are dedicated to didactic education and simulation process while the last two years is dedicated to practicums and housemanship trainings in University hospitals and/or accredited health institutions. After completion of such course, the students will have to take national licensure examinations. Passing the examination confers the right to become a nursing practitioner.
